Cloud 101
Cloud computing is a recent term which simply means that IT services, instead of being run on your hardware on your site by your people, are oustourced to the "cloud". The word "cloud" is used to imply that you do not have to know much about where or how this is done because you are paying somebody else to worry about that. All important aspects of the service are defined under some sort of Service Level Agreement which is meant to preclude service disruption or data loss.
It's also called, sometimes more fittingly, Software-as-a-Service or Utility Computing.
Emantra is predominantly a Private Cloud service provider. Here, the word "Private" means that the servers or service is privately dedicated to you (not other customers as well), hosted out of a known data centre, is flexible and customisable to your needs, is account managed on a personal and private basis, and has the capability of being delivered to you through private IP connection as well as the internet. This type of service is differentiated the lower cost Public Cloud products which tend to be one size fits all commodity-like services, hosted in a complex network of worldwide data centres, account managed on a anonymous call-centre basis and delivered through public internet links.
Companies which provide cloud services are banking that, because of their scale and focus, they can be better and more efficient at operating complex IT systems than you, and that therefore dividends can be returned to you by way of improved service levels and cost savings. If you pick the right service provider, this can indeed be true.
However, like most things, quality varies widely and if you are going to trust a service provider with your critical data and information systems, you must choose wisely. Within the pages of this website we present why we believe Emantra has a strong edge in this field.
